A Tighter Quantization Bound for the Spherical Harmonic Projection of Non-Negative Functions

Tyler Wiederien & Peter-Pike Sloan

Spherical harmonic approximations for games are often stored as a high precision DC component and a lower precision set of higher-order components. Here we use the non-negativity of lighting functions to derive a tight bound on the ratio of higher order components (in terms of the order) to the DC component. This allows us to more efficiently store higher order components.
